Mucormycosis
Mucormycosis also known as zyomycosis. This is a serious fungal infection but it is very rare. Affects only immunocompromised patient
The agent is mucomycetes

AFFECTS
Diabetic patients especially patients with diabetic keto acidosis
Also affects people who has taken steroids and broad spectrum antibiotics
And also affects people with other comorbidities
TYPES
Rhino cerebral
Pulmonary
Gastrointestinal
Disseminated
Cutaneous
Most common is Rhino cerebral
SYMPTOMS
Pain
Decreased sensation over half the face
Black discoloration
STAIN USED IN MICROSCOPE
Koh smear
Lactophenol cotton blue
CULTURE
Subouraud dextrose agar at 30 c
DIAGNOSTICS
Biopsy and culture
This should reach lab within 2 hours
CT non contract: mucosal thickening
MRI: black turbinate sign
CBC : check neutropenia
TREATMENT
Surgical debridement + toxic antifungal therapy can be given
Amphotericin B injection
Posaconazole
Isavuconazole
MORTALITY: 50%
NOTE
Mucormycosis is not black fungus
Dematecious fungi is known as black fungus
